Jonathan A. Dowell has been the Deputy Manager of the Department of Energy’s Office of River Protection (ORP) since January 2010. He is responsible for assisting the Manager in their responsibilities for the safe storage, retrieval, treatment, and disposal of chemical and radioactive waste at the Hanford Site.
Prior to this position, he was the Assistant Manager for Nuclear Safety and Engineering, where he was responsible for the authorization bases, nuclear safety, engineering (including criticality and fire protection), readiness reviews, and providing technical subject matter expertise and engineering support for the River Protection Project.
Mr. Dowell has 26 years of experience from the Navy Nuclear Power Program where he enjoyed a full career in nuclear submarines and acquisition management before joining the DOE. CAPTAIN (Ret) Dowell commanded USS ALABAMA as well as the Naval Undersea Warfare Engineering Center in Keyport, Washington before transitioning to the DOE in 2008.
Mr. Dowell holds a Bachelor degree in Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, a masters in Business Administration from the University of Nebraska, and is a Defense Acquisition Workforce Improvement Act (DAWIA) certified Program Manager.
