 Ray Skwarek is the director of Safety, Health and Quality Assurance for Washington Closure Hanford. He has more than 30 years’ experience in the commercial and government nuclear business.
Skwarek began his career in the nuclear business with Westinghouse Electric Corporation in engineering and management positions in the Power Systems Division working on nuclear safety analysis in support of Nuclear Regulatory Commission plant operating licenses.
After a one-year appointment to the U.S. Department of Defense as special assistant to the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Research, Development and Acquisition, he rejoined Westinghouse as the associate director of Technology Venture Programs and later moved to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site in South Carolina. The SRS was managed by the Westinghouse Savannah River Company, which later became the Washington Savannah River Company.
Over the next eighteen years, Skwarek served in several management positions where he was responsible for occupational and nuclear safety, quality assurance, facility engineering, waste management, environmental remediation and business management functions. In 2007, he moved to DOE’s Hanford Site as director of SH&Q for the River Corridor Closure Project, managed by Washington Closure.
Skwarek earned his BS and MS in mechanical engineering from Drexel University in 1974 and Stanford University in 1975, respectively. He earned his Master of Business Administration in management/finance from Duquesne University in 1982. He also is a Project Management Institute-certified project management professional.
