 Christine Spieth is widely regarded for her ability to balance conflicting interests and find a resolution. Frequently called on to resolve difficult labor-management issues, she typically brings a long-term humanistic perspective to the table. She has often been consulted on matters of policy by senior elected and appointed officials and served on a gubernatorial transition team.
She was Secretary-Treasurer (chief financial officer) for Service Employees International Union, Local 6, for twelve years before her retirement in 1997. In her eighteen years with SEIU Local 6, she represented health care workers, public sector workers, school employees and private maintenance janitors. Her grievance handling and collective bargaining experience included collaborative efforts to develop alternative strategies for resolving problems and further improve employer-labor relations. Spieth also served on the King County Personnel Board, an arbitration-like panel that addresses alleged violations of the career service guidelines, for a total of eight years with six as the chair.
Her service as a member of the Hanford Joint Council in a neutral seat during its years on the site, gave her the opportunity to gain expertise in the resolution of concerns relating to health, safety, and environmental issues in a work situation strongly focused on the clean-up mission. She holds a Bachelor’s degree and a Master of Arts degree, both from the University of Michigan.
