The Hanford Concerns Council approach saves time and financial resources, as it resolves many underlying safety concerns at the Hanford site. The average cost of resolving cases handled through the Council’s mediation process is well below 10% of the costs of resolving cases through traditional channels that preceded its existence.

It is important to note that while these costs include attorney fees, consultation by outside experts and documentation, they don’t include the actual outcome or benefit to the employee. In addition to substantial time and cost savings, numerous safety practices are reformed or better implemented as a result of Council actions.

"The council fills an important role by ensuring that no tank farm issue will be overlooked and no one pushed aside when they come forward to protect fellow workers, the environment and the community. Its existence will enhance both accountability for the site and dignity for workers. I commend the participating companies, the DOE, and Hanford Challenge for their agreement to cooperate, and urge other companies to join in this constructive and proven approach."
- Christine Gregoire, Governor
